Funded by the HK Electric Centenary Trust and administered by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS), the U3A (University of 3rd Age) Network of Hong Kong was established in 2006 to encourage local retirees to pursue lifelong learning and contribute to the community through volunteering.
Upholding the "learning for pleasure" principle, U3A is not bound by accreditation, assessment or any qualifications to be gained, but rather advocates interest-based and self-initiated learning. Classes are taught and run by elders for the elders.
According to a social impact assessment conducted by CSR Asia on the programme, 98% of U3A participants have achieved or maintained an active or extremely active level of social engagement after joining the network. 75% of participants have become more confident in sharing views with others, boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
To further encourage lifelong learning and volunteerism among the local retired population, HK Electric and HKCSS launched the Smart Power Ambassadors Training in 2018 to educate elderly citizens on energy efficiency and help spread green messages in the community.

CAREnJOY for the Elderly
Partnering with districts councils and nine elderly service agencies on Hong Kong Island, and joined by rural committees on Lamma Island, HK Electric extends its care to the elderly through the "CAREnJOY" programme.
The programme also promotes mutual support in the neighbourhood, where senior citizens are recruited and trained as ambassadors to encourage other elderly to join local service centres, so that they are connected to community support and know where to seek help if needed.
Visits to single elders and district-based electrical safety talks cum gatherings are held on Hong Kong and Lamma islands. Material aids in the form of daily necessities are provided during monthly visits. HK Electric volunteers are also making use of their expertise to inspect the electrical installations in the elders' homes, and to share energy safety and efficiency tips.
In 2019, during home visits and district-based talks, senior citizens will be encouraged to do exercises good for the brain, and will receive tips on how to prevent dementia. Tangrams, a traditional Chinese puzzle, are specially produced as souvenirs to help stimulate the creativity of elders.
