In 2017, HK Electric and the State Grid Corporation of China signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Silk Road International School of Engineering in delivering a course on the design and operations of power systems for academics and management staff of power industry in the "Belt and Road" countries. The School is jointly set up by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Launched in 2018, the "Advanced Professional Development Programme in Power and Energy" marked the first collaborative project co-run by the engineering industry and the tertiary education sector. The programme would last for 3 years covering courses on "Key Technologies of Global Energy Interconnection" and "Distribution System for Metropolitan Cities". HK Electric is responsible for the topic on power distribution systems. Participants attended a series of professional workshops, field studies and technical discussion to appreciate the ultra-high voltage transmission network and its interconnection as well as the sophisticated distribution systems for skyscrapers in metropolitan cities.
