Go low carbon, use e-bills! To encourage customers to go paperless and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in daily life, HK Electric is offering a one-off tariff rebate of $30 for customers registering for e-bill service before 31 December 2010. Customers can opt to use the rebate as donation for a designated green group in Hong Kong.
HK Electric General Manager (Transmission and Distribution), Mr. Ip Pak-nin said that to "use less paper and conserve resources" is one of the green initiatives adopted by the Company. At present, the majority of its 560,000 customers are receiving monthly electricity bills by post and the e-bill promotion exercise is intended to encourage more customers to turn to e-bill and help protect the environment.
The Company has since July this year stepped up promotion of e-bill service through its Customer Centre and on website, attracting over 14,000 new subscribers. Mr. Ip hopes more customers will join in before the end of the year.
"Each customer can help reduce carbon dioxide emission by about 620 grams a year by switching to electronic bills. If we can get an additional 20,000 customers to join in, we can further save papers and help conserve about 540 trees a year," he said.
To take a step further, customers can donate the rebate to one of the four designated green groups, i.e., The Conservancy Association, Friends of the Earth (HK), Green Power and World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong, Mr. Ip added.
HK Electric is in fact the first public utility in Hong Kong to adopt "paperless" application for all accounts related services. Customers can apply for electricity, transfer of account and other account services via telephone, email and electronic forms available on the Company's website. It also offers electronic payment services including autopay and PPS services, while "Account-on-Line" services enable customers to check their account information leisurely and conveniently.
