Internet Security Tips

To safeguard the interest of our customers, HK Electric implements the following security practices:

  • We will never send out any emails asking customers to validate the "Account-On-Line" username and password
  • For security of the account information, customers are required to complete the authentication process during registration in order to activate the "Account-On-Line" Service. If authentication cannot be completed during registration, customers can still activate the Service upon the first time log-in by inputting the designated activation code provided in the notification letter which will be sent to customers' correspondence address by mail
  • Access to the Service will be blocked for one day after exceeding the maximum number of failed log-in attempts and will only resume on the next day
  • The system will automatically log out the "Account-On-Line" Service if the system has been idle for a while. Re-login is required to access the account information again

To reinforce the security to our "Account-On-Line" Service, we have the following recommendations:

1. Set a strong password and keep it confidential

  • Do not use a password that related to your identity card number, birthday, name, phone number, etc.
  • Set your password with combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols
  • Do not use dictionary words as your password.
  • Avoid using the same password for different online services
  • Change your password regularly
  • Memorise your password and do not write it down
  • Do not disclose your password to anyone
  • If you forgot your password, please reset a new password via "Forgot Password"

2. Use online service carefully

  • Ensure there is nobody standing near you during your login process
  • Remember to log out after using online service
  • Only use trusted Wi-Fi networks or service providers
  • Never use online service from public or shared terminals such as cafes and libraries
  • Always clear the cache and history record in browser after finishing online service

3. Be aware of fraudulent emails and websites

  • Access HK Electric website by manually inputting www.hkelectric.com or bookmark
  • Stay alert to bogus emails that usually appear as an important notification, requesting customer to open hyperlink(s) or attachment(s) in the email to extract important data from the victims
  • Do not open any unknown emails, or click on any hyperlinks or attachments embedded but delete the email as soon as possible
  • Do not access the online service through hyperlinks embedded in the unknown emails
  • You can click the "padlock" icon on the left of the address bar of your browser to view the security certificate of the "Account-On-Line". The security certificate should be issued to aol.hkelectric.com
