HK Electric Attains Top Prizes for Sustainability and Innovation

12 Nov 2019

HK Electric has been presented with the "2018/19 Hong Kong Sustainability Award" and "Special Recognition for Innovation" by The Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) in recognition of the Company's commitment to sustainability and the enhancement of performance through innovation and adoption of advance technology.

While acknowledging that the awards are most encouraging, HK Electric's Managing Director, Mr. Wan Chi-tin, said:  "We have not only dedicated resources to support and promote sustainable development of energy to combat climate change, but also partnered with the community to bring long-term social, environmental and economic impacts to society and promote a culture that values corporate social responsibility."

"In recent years, we have placed greater emphasis on promoting innovation as an integral part of our corporate strategy, understanding fully that innovation is the key to the success of our business," he added.

Being the power behind Hong Kong, HK Electric is proud to have maintained a world-class power supply reliability rating of over 99.999% since 1997. The average power interruption has been kept to less than one minute per customer per year for the last ten years since 2009. The Company has also maintained tariffs affordable to customers. To transform Hong Kong into a "smart city", HK Electric is planning to implement smart metering service for all customers by 2025.

In safeguarding the environment, Mr. Wan said: "HK Electric places great emphasis on low-carbon power generation and supports the wider application of renewable energy. The synchronisation of the new gas-fired unit L10 to our power grid last month marks a major step forward in our transition from coal-to-gas generation.

"With the progressive commissioning of the three new gas-fired units that are to replace the retiring coal-fired units in the following years, our gas-fired generation will reach about 70% by 2023. By then, our absolute carbon emission could be reduced by more than 40% compared to 2005 levels," he explained.

Besides using more natural gas for power generation, HK Electric is actively promoting the application of renewable energy (RE). The Feed-in-tariff Scheme and Renewable Energy Certificates have been introduced to encourage customers to install their own RE installations.

HK Electric is also committed to fulfilling its corporate social responsibility. The Company has launched four campaigns which focus on elderly care and green education initiatives. All these projects have been running for more than a decade, reflecting the commitment to sustainable development.

In 2018, the Company collaborated with the Hong Kong Council of Social Service to introduce the Smart Power Ambassadors Training Programme which successfully integrated green education, life-long learning and community-serving spirit.

Retirees were trained and given the task of spreading the green words to their own communities, inspiring others to do the same. A total of 54 senior citizens -- selected from more than 100 participants -- conducted around 70 sharing sessions spreading green messages to more than 1,600 participants.

Other than the "Hong Kong Sustainability Award" , HK Electric also collected the "Special Recognition for Innovation" award. Mr. Wan said that besides big data and AI, HK Electric also uses drones and robotics to optimise operation and its staff is inspired to use end-user-developed apps and technologies to streamline work processes.

More than 40 mobile apps have been developed during the year, including an app which could process applications for the Smart Power Care Fund in an easy and efficient manner, saving paperwork and manpower.

The "Hong Kong Sustainability Award" was launched by the Hong Kong Management Association in October 2016 to promote to the business sector the importance of sustainable development. The "Special Recognition for Innovation" was granted to organisations which have implemented their sustainability measures in an innovative way.
