Supporting the HKSAR Government's vision to transform Hong Kong into a "Smart City", HK Electric's Happy Green Campaign (formerly "Smart Power Campaign") is organising a series of educational activities throughout the year on the theme of "Smart Power for Smart City".
At the campaign's launching ceremony, HK Electric General Manager (Public Affairs) Ms. Mimi Yeung explained that the new name aimed to remind the public that taking green actions will bring joy.
"With the new Scheme of Control Agreement between HK Electric and the Government coming into effect from 1 January this year, we are committed to allocating HK$5 million a year for organising green education activities, and sponsoring community initiatives on promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy and low carbon lifestyle," said Ms Yeung.
In particular, she highlighted some of the new initiatives this year, such as free energy audits for schools to assess energy consumption and identify saving options; overseas study trips to bring outstanding ambassadors and winning teams of the "Green Energy Dreams Come True" competition to Dali, Yunnan, where they will visit renewable energy facilities including a wind farm, and see how Dali has developed to become a Smart City in mainland China.
At home, students and the public will be given a brand new "Smart Power Experience" with the soon-to-open Smart Power Gallery where visitors will be able to learn more about energy efficiency, renewable energy, low carbon lifestyle and smart city through multi-media and interactive displays.
In addition to promoting on Facebook and YouTube, the campaign will leverage on other popular digital media to spread the green messages, including producing a mini-movie, VR games and online games to reach various audiences.
Another key element of the campaign, the "Green Energy Dreams Come True" competition, will remain open to all secondary school students. Participants will form teams to propose and realise their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineers, Arts and Mathematics) dreams with the $50,000 seed money to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy and the use of technology in building a smart and sustainable city. A new award will be introduced to encourage creativity.
Other than receiving prizes at the launching ceremony, two outstanding school ambassadors had an open discussion with Senior Engineer of Electrical & Mechanical Services Department Mr. Mak Kim-kong, Vice-chairman of Green Power Dr. Man Chi-sum, and Head of Technical Services, HK Electric Mr. Wilson Kwok at the event. The guests shared their interpretations of Smart City and how the Government, HK Electric and the community could contribute to a greener and smarter Hong Kong.
Mr. Mak suggested that students might influence their parents to purchase electrical appliances with energy efficiency labels, while Dr. Man gave tips on how a low carbon lifestyle could contribute to a sustainable future. Mr. Kwok illustrated how HK Electric engages the public to support smart environment, smart living and smart mobility through the "Feed-in-Tariff" scheme to promote renewable energy, electric living and wider use of electric vehicle.
